Professionally, Adrian Thurston is probably better known in London for founding several fringe theatres including The Chair Theatre & The Alma Cafe Theatre, as well as being involved in the founding of many others including the Barons Court Theatre, The Gate Theatre and The Finborough Theatre. Has written over 25 film and television scripts of which the best know is Detor, later to emerge as, In Defence of the Realm; for Producer David Puttnam. Adrian has written product for all media including radio, theatre, TV and 6 movie screenplays of which the best is probably Glaswegian Kiss or Beyond the Temple of Artemis. Has written historical drama, suspense thriller, crime thriller, film noir and science fiction. Was Assistant Director on several internationally known feature films including; The Company of Wolves, Nineteen Eighty-Four and the original Highlander I movie.
Directed the award winning information video "One Day" (for its contribution to the International Year of the Disabled Child Exhibition) and a series of 7 NACAB videos still used by the BBC for training personnel officers. Has produced and directed more than 20 information and corporate videos and directed over 50 theatrical productions between 1981 and 1992. Was Artistic Director of Studio 68 of Theatre Arts Drama School London during 1988, a school known for producing many Internationally known actors such as Sean Connery and Helena Bonham Carter among others. Worked for Debra Bolling Productions in New York City during 1990/1 directing music videos for Warner Communications and others.
Was elected Chairman of the Producers & Directors Branch Division of BECTU (the official UK trade union for film & television) and joined the Directors Guild of Great Britain in 1993. Adrian is now a senior member affiliated to the DGA in the USA, the DGA in Australia, DGC in Canada and others. Has spent the last 3 years lecturing in film and television at the London Academy of Media Film & Television and has occasionally directed some music videos and links for TV.
Lectured in film & TV at the London Academy of Media, Film & TV between 1999 and 2007 (the last 2 years as a board director). In 2004 Adrian was appointed Director of the newly founded Shanghai Sipo Hua Shi Media Arts Academy, designed 3 degree courses and put plans into operation to make Hua Shi one of the leading schools of new media arts in Shanghai CHINA within 5 years. In 2007, Adrian spent 3 months in Indonesia lecturing at AWS Communications University in Suarabaya and giving a well publicised public lecture on methods of evaluating documentary films attended by over 300 students and professionals from across the city.
Adrian went to the Hamburg Film Festival in 2006 to help promote Director Zhang Jia Rui's movie THE ROAD after collaborating with him on writing Nowhis new movie RED RIVER. THE ROAD was one of four movies nominated for the best foreign film Oscar 2006.
